LADY TIGERS FALL IN STATE QUARTERFINALS

The Coweta Lady Tigers lost out in the quarterfinals of the 2016 5A State Volleyball Tournament in Mustang last week, falling 0-3 to Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness to complete a 27-18 season that saw the young team learn to battle. Qualifying for the state tournament for the second straight year, the Lady Tigers lost the first set 16-25 before battling up to force a tight 24-26 loss in the second set and fell 14-16 in the deciding set to lose the match. “It was a tough loss, our age and maturity really showed. For such a young team I’d say we had a pretty great season,” second year Head Coach Morgan McClanahan said. Coweta started three freshmen, a junior and two seniors most of the season and won their 5A district and the 5A regional tournament to qualify for state. The Lady Tigers only managed two aces, 19 kills, 1.5 blocks and did not record any assists or digs in their loss at Mustang. Kaila Thomas had 5 kills, MaKenna Russell added 5 kills, Linzy Dill had 1 ace, 4 kills and 1.5 blocks. Reese Simpler had 3 kills, Heather Stiles 1 kill and Hannah Casteel recorded 1 ace. Completing their senior seasons and Lady Tiger careers were Kaila Thomas, MaKenna Russell and Kinsey Lee. The remainder of the team returns to give the Lady Tigers a solid and more experienced squad for the 2017 campaign, although the senior leadership will certainly be missed. In other first round action OKC Mount St. Mary defeated Shawnee 3-0 with set scores of 28-26, 26-24 and 25-20, Collinsville defeated Tulsa Cascia Hall 3-2, with set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 22-25 and 15-5 and Tulsa Kelley defeated Skiatook 3-0 with set scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-13. Semi-final action in the 5A tournament saw OKC Mount St. Mary defeat Collinsville 3-0, with set scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-9 and Tulsa Kelley defeated OKC McGuinness 3-0, with set scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17. Oklahoma City Mount St. Mary shocked Tulsa Bishop Kelley’s Lady Comets in the championship finals with a 3-1 win, taking sets of 27-25, 16-25, 25-12 and 25-21.
