An annual event that brings students together to share their Christian faith has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for next year.

The 11th annual Fields of Faith was scheduled to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School football field.

O-W has been closed along with other schools in Orangeburg consolidated school districts 3, 4 and 5 until Thursday, Oct. 13, in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

"The site was scheduled for Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School and part of their policy is if the school is closed, no activities can take place. We felt that we needed to cancel, and what we're hoping to do is see if we can reschedule another event probably in early spring," said Earl Humes, director of the Tri-County Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

"We haven't decided yet what that date will be, but of course we would have to do that working with Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, their coaches and Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5," Humes said.

His initial disappointment at cancelling the event was tempered by the hardships that people impacted by Hurricane Matthews are experiencing.

"When I saw that the school was going to be closed, of course you're disappointed because Fields of Faith is an opportunity to bring students and the community together. But when I started reading about the people who have died in the storm, I'm just so grateful for our leadership team in South Carolina -- and from what I've seen in North Carolina and Florida. They've just done an incredible job of keeping people safe, and I think that's very important," Humes said

"We're in prayer for the people in Haiti and all of the families who have lost relatives to this storm. We're just looking forward to the next opportunity that we can do something similar to Fields of Faith," he said.
