Tigers know game’s importance

MaxPreps thought enough of Friday’s game between Bentonville and Springdale Har-Ber that it was listed as one of the top 10 games in the nation this week.

Tigers coach Jody Grant, however, already knew how important this game was to his team. The winner moves into sole possession of first place in the 7A-West Conference, and it could give Bentonville (4-1, 2-0) an inside track toward the league title.

“It’s a big game as far as conference implications,” Grant said. “We’re excited about the opportunity to go down to Har-Ber and compete against a quality football team.

“This is a game that we’ve had marked, truthfully, because you look back at our schedule last year and they were the only team to beat us. Our kids remember that and have worked hard for this opportunity.”

Har-Ber claimed a 31-21 victory over Bentonville last season and went on to win the 7A-West title, ending the Tigers’ string of eight consecutive league championships. Grant said that loss has had an effect as Bentonville prepares for this week’s game.

“Our kids understand that, and we had a really good practice on Monday,” Grant said. “The focus and attention were there. As a coach, you look for stuff and see their significant attention to detail and that they’re doing things right.

“Obviously, when you’re playing a quality football team, you have to have some breaks go your way, but I think our kids are excited about this opportunity.”
