NICEVILLE OVERWHELMS MOSLEY

Niceville featured rushing touchdowns by T.J. Pope and Brooks Alexander and a 21-yard touchdown pass between Will Koch and Jack White, but it was defense and special teams that paved the way for the Eagles’ 37-0 win over Mosley on Friday night in high school football. The Dolphins, 4-3, continued an extended rash of injuries when they lost tailback Darien Ganzy to a shoulder injury in the second quarter. Niceville was well on its way to a 23-0 halftime lead by then. Mosley reached the red zone twice, but had a field-goal attempt blocked and turned the ball over on downs. Niceville added a punt return for a touchdown to initiate a running clock in the second half as the Dolphins’ defense had to defend short fields on three occasions. “You can’t do that against bad teams much less one as well coached as Niceville,” Mosley coach Jeremy Brown said. “We gave them the ball inside the 30 twice in the first half and once in the second half. We put our defense in bad situations.” Josh Lingenfelter, a converted wide receiver, went the distance at quarterback in relief of injured starter Michael Maddox and backup Liam Byrd. Mosley was led by tailback John Miller who rushed 20 times for 137 yards. Ganzy was held to minus-5 yards rushing before his injury. Mosley is idle next week, which could be seen as a blessing considering the Dolphins’ injury report. “At the end of the game we were down eight starters on offense,” Brown said. “I’ve never looked forward to an open week as much as this as a coaching staff. “Hopefully we can get some of them back. But I want to stress that our kids kept fighting. They played hard the entire game. I can’t fault the effort at all.” Niceville improved to 5-1, its only defeat a lopsided loss to a Texas power. Mosley entered the game averaging more than 30 points, but has been held to just 13 in its last eight quarters. The Dolphins have been without a first- or second-string quarterback in six of them.
