LADY ROUGHERS SWEEP WASHINGTON ON SENIOR NIGHT

The Muskogee Lady Roughers tuned up for regionals Thursday night with a 3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-13) sweep of Tulsa Washington before a packed Senior Night crowd in their regular season finale. The win closed Muskogee’s regular season at 20-15 while Washington finished with a mark of 10-18. Muskogee easily controlled the first and third sets but had to battle the Lady Hornets (10-18) in the middle set which was tied 10 times before Washington took control with a 5-0 run to overcome a 12-11 Muskogee lead. The Lady Roughers took four of the next five points to make it 17-16. Washington stretched the lead to 20-16 and had the Roughers on the ropes up 23-21 lead only to have Muskogee win three consecutive points. Washington tied it up at 24. But a kill by Cierra Lewis and an awkward but effective spike by Madison Wiebe won the set for the Lady Roughers. “Washington stepped up their game in the second set and played a lot more aggressively,” said Rougher head coach John Hammer. “We got down four points but I had confidence we’d just keep chipping away and then we had that fluke kill at the end, but it is what it is.” Hammer, finishing his 13th season, felt his team met their goals, including his own goal of 20 wins. “We could have won another handful of close matches as well. That was our 22nd ranked opponent that we played this season so we had a tough schedule and we also beat a top 10 ranked team (Broken Arrow) earlier, so I’m pleased,” he said. Seabolt, one of four seniors honored, reflected on the moment. “It was really bittersweet to play for the last time at home. I loved playing with these girls all season and couldn’t ask for a better team,” said Seabolt. Muskogee gets Union in the first round of regionals on Tuesday. They lost to the seventh-ranked Lady Redskins 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 without Seabolt, who missed with a concussion. In addition to Seabolt and Lewis, Ja’Layiah Collins and Demya Brown also played their final home game Thursday.
