Keaton Bathras knows one aspect of the Severna Park boys soccer team’s approach that is working well.

“We’re working the ball around quick, which is a huge key to the success of this team,” said Bathras, a senior midfielder for the Falcons.

He and his teammates employed their fast-moving philosophy effectively early in Tuesday’s matchup with South River, engineering a goal scored by Nate Carey off of Bathras’ cross to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead inside of three minutes.

Carey scored again in the second half to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead, and after the Seahawks got back into the game with a goal, Bathras closed the deal with a goal to help lift Severna Park (5-0) stay unbeaten and untied with a 3-1 win.

Ian Musser assisted Carey’s second goal of the game, while striker Drew Belloff assisted on Bathras’ clinching score.

Carey, who moved the ball swiftly through the midfield with Bathras, Sam Kriel, Ryan Muldoon, said the team’s offensive weapons rose above the fray on Tuesday.

“It’s really nice having the amount of players that we do that can play on the field well and work together well, and just a lot of talented kids on the team,” said Carey, a junior. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Sam Farrell finished with five saves in goal for the Falcons, including a sensational leaping save in the first half to keep Severna Park ahead 1-0.

The Falcons face a tough test Thursday when they travel to Meade for a 6:00 p.m. start. The Mustangs remain undefeated at 5-0.
