Another football night in the county yielded another gridiron battle that went right down to the wire.

On Thursday at Northeast High School, Severna Park’s last-ditch effort to force overtime with South River came up five yards short of the end zone as time expired, leaving the Falcons lamenting missed opportunities in a 28-21 loss to the Seahawks.

“It’s tough. There were a couple times the ball didn’t bounce our way and a couple times we didn’t execute as well as we could have,” said Severna Park head coach Will Bell. “That’s how it swung at the end.”

Like a slew of games in Anne Arundel County so far this season, Thursday night’s contest was closely battled and hung in the balance for either side to take.

The Seahawks (3-2), fresh off a 46-42 victory over Annapolis and having scored 105 points in their last three games, struck first on their opening series when quarterback Caleb Edney threw a deep pass to Ryan Proctor, hitting Proctor in stride on the right sideline for a 31-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Joe Jennings picked up first downs on long runs on the Falcons’ ensuing drive, as did Josh Coffman on an 11-yard pass from Garrett Edwards to get Severna Park deep into South River territory. South River ended the threat abruptly, however, as Frankie Cole picked off Edwards to get the ball back.

Severna Park defensive back Drew Jeffries returned the favor on South River’s next drive, intercepting Edney, but the Falcons again failed to put points on the board, and

Edney and Proctor connected on another deep pass for a 68-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Given the Falcons’ three straight losses after their season-opening win over North County, the game could have gotten out of hand against the hot Seahawks, but Severna Park fought back. They moved the chains on their ensuing possession, and Coffman bounced out left, broke a tackle and cruised into the end zone for a 13-yard score before halftime. The kick by Travis Victorio was good, and the Falcons trailed 14-7 at the break:
