At the halfway mark of the 2017 football season, Claremore’s toughest competition is ahead of them. So far, they have taken care of business, at least in district play.

The Zebras are 4-1 and 2-0 after handling Tulsa Memorial 49-13 Friday night for a big Homecoming win at Lantow Field.

Claremore senior quarterback Noah Grimett threw for four touchdowns and had some bruising runs as the Zebras rolled over the visitors.

Looking ahead, the Zebras will travel to Bishop Kelley for a key District 5A-4 showdown next Friday.

This win was not only a blowout on the scoreboard, but it was also a physically dominating performance by the home team.

But the game didn’t start out that way.

Memorial took the opening kickoff and marched the field thanks to a strong running game.

Jamoni Jones capped that drive with a 19-yard run at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter and Memorial grabbed the early lead.

Trailing 7-0, the Zebras kicked it into high gear and answered with a long drive of their own, capped by a 7-yard run by Coleman Parsons, tying the scored at 7 with 1:23 left in the first.

Then the Zebras opened things up. Tired of the run, they turned to Grimett’s strong arm, and the hurler hit Dylan Kedzior on a wheel route for an 85-yard score with 8:05 left in the second quarter.

Two minutes later, Grimett struck again, this time with a lofted pass into the end zone and in the hands of Taylor Davis, who made a diving catch for a 21-7 lead.

The Zebras got the ball back and used the clock to their advantage. With just 12.3 seconds left in the first half, Dakota Hudson scampered in from the 3 and Claremore was in command, 28-7, at intermission.

The Homecoming festivities didn’t seem to distract the Zebras from their mission, and they picked right up where they left off midway through the third.

Grimett tossed his third touchdown, this time a 5-yard pass to Montana Huffaker with 7:28 left in the third. Claremore now led 35-7...but they weren’t done.

With 1:44 left in the third, Grimett found Kedzior again for a long score. Kedzior, a sophomore who made the finals of the 400 meters as a freshman last season, out-ran the Memorial defenders, shook off a late horsecollar tackle at the 10 and landed in the end zone for a 70-yard score.

Claremore led 42-7.

Memorial had a little life left in their tank, and Jones ran for his second touchdown of the game, this one from the 5 as the Chargers cut the lead to 42-13 with 4:25 left.

But the Claremore reserves wanted in on the action and Bryson Brown capped the scoring with a 10-yard run with 1:40 left.
