The Priest River girls soccer team continued to struggle over the last two weeks with losses to St. Maries, Kellogg, Northwest Christian-Colbert, and Timberlake.

On Sept. 12, the girls lost to St. Maries 6-1 on the strength of the Lumberjacks’ offensive dominance. The visitors had 16 shots with nine on goal, compared to Priest River’s six shots and two on goal, said head coach Shannon Fraser.

Priest River’s lone goal came on a Jasmine Martin assist to Karah Fink 13 minutes into the second half.

Fraser said the Spartans came out and played hard against the Kellogg Wildcats Sept. 16, but weren’t able to overcome the opposition in a 3-0 loss. Hernandez again made multiple great saves on goal, stopping 11 of Kellogg’s 16 shots. The Spartan offense increased their shot output with eight shots on goal.

Then on Sept. 21 the girls lost 3-0 again, this time to visiting Northwest Christian-Colbert. Fraser praised her defense but said on both offense and defense the team still needed to improve.

The team has had multiple starters out due to injuries throughout the disappointing stretch of the season, but Fraser said her players have adjusted and continued to work for improved performances.

At home against Timberlake Sept. 23, the girls dropped a 5-1 contest that resulted from numerous handball fouls in front of the Priest River goal. As usual, goalkeeper Hernandez kept the team in contention and made numerous saves on opponent shots, including on one penalty kick.

Chelsea Brown got the team’s lone goal in the 38th minute of the first half after she was awarded a penalty kick.

In a Sept. 25 rematch with Timberlake, Fraser said the Spartans walked onto the field cold and got rocked early by the Tigers in an 8-1 loss. The Priest River offense managed only five shots on goal.

Fraser said, “We hope to keep improving and preparing ourselves to be the best team possible by the time districts comes around.”
