SPARTAN XC FACES OFF AGAINST STATEWIDE COMPETITION

Several of Priest River’s top cross-country athletes travelled south to compete in the Bob Firman Invitational here Sept. 22, and head coach Lance Clark said the experience will pay dividends for the whole team in the days to come. The boys team finished 16th out of 44 teams from across the region. Cameron Parkes came in 38th with a time of 17:23, and Caleb Gleason finished 54th at 17:37. Jordan Phillips finished in 18:54, Slava Negrieiev ran in 18:59, Konner Durham notched a time of 19:08, Spencer Sedgwick finished in 19:45, almost two minutes better than his previous best, said Clark. The team is near where it needs to be to place at states later this year, Clark explained. “In our state division, the team got edged for 4th place by a few points by Kimberly. We were 5th place among the teams we will see at state. 4th place will trophy at state. We are getting there. We had a few kids with colds and one runner ran in his training shoes.” The trip to Boise was an experiment for the team, with funds coming from team fundraisers. “The trip was worth every penny and crucial not only for our team’s success at the state course, but also against those teams in which they will be competing against. I really saw the value of our future teams going to this meet. They get an idea what they are looking at when the go down to state. My hope is to take down future teams with the talent and hard work that it takes to put themselves in route to the state competition later in the season. I am proud of our boys group for their hard work and determination to do well at this race. This is the best performance of all my past teams that I have coached in such a large race.”
