The Whitney High girls volleyball team came off a 3-0 loss to Cosumnes Oaks Sept. 25 and swept Antelope 3-0 Sept. 27.

The Wildcats wrap up the week in the Oak Ridge Tournament Saturday.

Playing with a mixed lineup, caused by some players suffering illness during the week, did not slow Whitney’s effort against the Titans. The Wildcats defeated their hosts 25-15, 25-20 and 25-12.

“Yesterday we had a bunch of girls out that were sick so today we started with a different lineup,” said Whitney head coach Jeff LaShell. (Kylee Stephens) played middle for us today. She did a really good job of coming and playing a position that’s really tough to play.”

LaShell said the team knew coming in they would have an edge on the winless Titans. In spite of that LaShell said his club still committed unforced errors giving Antelope the opportunity to get back into the game.

The coach said his main concern was complacency; however, the Titans used the opportunities to put the ‘Cats back on their heels. LaShell said he had to call a couple timeouts to remind his athletes to play with the same intensity they showed against the Wolfpack.

“I think Cosumnes (Oaks) was a really good match for us. We lost in three, but they were very, very tight sets,” LaShell said. “I thought we played very well and we’re moving in the right direction.”

Senior starter Kaitlin Bullock did not enter the contest until the third set. Her presence was felt almost immediately as the Wildcats wrapped up the final set 25-12.

Sophomore Kendall Gimenez had eight kills against Antelope and led with five aces on 16 serves. She also had two blocks, along with sophomore Makena Zajec.

Gimenez also had four digs and Bullock three. Gimenez and Uriah Villa had seven received serves apiece and Kaylie Honberger received five.

Cosumnes Oaks 3, Whitney 0

The Wolfpack won 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24.

Honberger had 12 kills against Cosumnes Oaks and Gimenez nine. McKenna Kelsey and Bullock combined for 28 serves, and Honberger had two aces with 10 serves.

Ashley Williams led with two of the Wildcats’ six blocks. Honberger received 20 serves and Bullock a dozen. Honberger also had 15 digs, Kelsey nine and Bullock eight.

Next up is Bella Vista (3-3, 8-5) Monday and Del Campo (1-5, 4-9) Wednesday, both on the road.
