The Wagoner Bulldogs won their 42nd straight game on Friday beating Miami 55-14, tying the 11-man state record for consecutive wins set by Ada.

The three-time defending Class 4A champions improved to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in District 4A-3 while Miami dropped to 0-5, 2-0 in district.

For Wagoner coach Dale Condict, keeping the team focused was a matter of putting out the fire in front of them.

“Tonight was tying the record, so that was a big accomplishment in its own right,” Condict said. “We’ve had situations like this plenty of times in the past where we know we should be able to get out with a win. It’s going to be more about how we play.”

The Bulldogs dominated the first half, scoring touchdowns on seven of their nine possessions. Blake Dumond and Nikia Jones were responsible for most of the damage, connecting on touchdown passes of 77, 41, 19 and 25 yards to help Wagoner to a 48-0 lead at intermission.

The Bulldogs’ defense strutted their stuff as well, holding Miami to minus-42 yards rushing in the first half and minus-9 the entire game.

“What’s made our defense really good overall is our run defense,” Condict said. “It starts with our front people — the defensive line. They’re a very talented group of young men when they want to can really play at a high level.”

For the game, Dumond completed 6 of 8 passes for 179 yards and the four scores, Jones had five receptions for 172 yards and Schyler Adair had two touchdown runs of 10 and 44 yards.

The Bulldogs can break the record at 7 p.m. next Friday when they host Tulsa McLain for homecoming.

“They’ve got to realize how many people are going to be there from Wagoner that’s going to see this big event,” Condict. “They’re not just playing for this year, they’re playing for the previous three years.”
