The Hutchinson girl’s golf invitational featured 18 high schools at Carey Park Thursday afternoon.

With 111 girls in the field, Buhler coach Brennan Torgerson said it’s not about how big or small the tournament is, but simply playing the golf course.

The Crusaders had six girls in the tournament, four of which never played the sport before the start of the season.

“They are maybe a month and a half or two months into their golf career and they’ve done very well,” Torgensen said after watching Jordan Martens chip in a shot. “This is a place that we’re familiar with, and it’s a little comforting. I try to talk to them and tell them it’s you versus the golf course. It’s not who you’re playing with or who you’re playing against, but hit the next best shot you can.”

Martens, a senior, and Haley Miller, a junior were the only Crusader golfers with experience in the field. Miller had nice shot out the sand on hole No. 17 to land on the greens.

The winner of the invitational was Wichita Trinity. Buhler came in 12th. Miller was the highest individual scorer for Buhler at 37th.

The Hutchinson Salthawks placed 14th as a team in their home invitational. Coach Charles Pierce said he thought his team had a bit of nerves with their parents out watching them, but the goal is to get better every day to prepare for Regionals on Oct. 10 and state on Oct. 17.

The Salthawks also have a young team with only two players returning from varsity play in Mariah Cannon and Meredith Kinney. Kinney placed 26th among individuals.
