Fortune didn’t favor the Pittsburg High School soccer team on Thursday, as the Purple Dragons were held scoreless in the 2-0 loss to Classical Academy.

Several scoring opportunities for PHS went by the wayside throughout the contest, frustrating the Pittsburg attackers.

“It’s just frustrating,” Pittsburg head coach Kyle Bockover said. “I felt like that was a winnable game for us and one that we should have put away early. Their striker has a lot of speed and we got caught out of position twice when they scored. They caught us in bad spots and they capitalized. We’re connecting passes and moving the ball well, but we’re still struggling with finishing, so that’s something we’ll continue to work on.”

Classical Heights scored both goals in the early going of the first half and kept the pressure on the Purple Dragons, forcing them into turnovers and miscues.

“I don’t know that it was their defense as much as it was us not helping ourselves out,” Bockover said. “We had three scoring opportunities when we had the ball in a dangerous area and couldn’t finish, their center backs bobbled the ball a couple times and we couldn’t finish and their goalie bobbled the ball once, but we didn’t have anyone rushing in the box to score it. We’re a young team, so hopefully we just continue to learn and grow.”

Pittbsurg’s intensity rose in the scoreless second half, as the offense pushed the ball up the field and attacked the goal, but came out with nothing to show for it.
