The Whitney High cross-country team narrowly missed sweeping the Capital Valley League Center Meet at Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom Wednesday.

The varsity girls were first and the boys ended up in second by a margin of 14 points in the 5K event. The Wildcats girls finished first and the boys second in the frosh/soph meet as well.

The varsity girls totaled 42 points to Cosumnes Oaks’ 47 and Ponderosa was third with 74 points.

Freshman Kirsten Ransford led the varsity girls placing sixth in 20 minutes, 31.27 seconds. Right behind her was Rachel Payan (7th, 20:31.39) and Avery Lambrite (8th, 20:48.03). Filling out the top six were Brooke Giorgi (10th, 20:57.35), Meghan Townsley (11th, 21:13.92) and Daria Pond (17th, 21:51.01).

Ransford, Payan and Giorgi set personal records. Payan is a junior and Giorgi a sophomore.

Ethan Dodge missed breaking the ribbon by less than four seconds. The sophomore’s time of 16:26.35 was good for second place. Austin Shields (17:00.94) was No. 2 in eighth place and Josh Kling (17:05.22) No. 3 in ninth place.

Also contributing to the ‘Cats’ totals were Austin Vasquez (11th, 17:14.77) and Josh Tajiri (18th, 17:38.79); Brenden Jacoby (18:19.23) was sixth. Vasquez, Tajiri and Jacoby are also sophomores.

Frosh/Soph 3400m

Whitney’s top seven runners swept every place except first, fourth and fifth. The Wildcats score of 26 was almost half of Bella Vista’s 51 in second place.

Hannah Lee blazed to a personal record of 14:54.36 for second. Jessican Becker was third in 15:04.86. Sixth through 10th were Payton Diamond (15:29.81), Haley Bedrin (15:33.09), Grace Pierce (15:33.16), Jessica Franco (15:33.52) and Eve Zguleva (15:48.67); all times were personal records.

The boys nosed out Oakmont 61-63 for second; Bella Vista took first with 26 points.

Malachai Amore led the top seven in 12:27.48 for fifth. The trailing six were Byron Chadwick (12th, 12:43.69), Aidan Redding (13th, 12:44.67), Tyler Hawkins (15th, 12:48.86), Adam Beard (20th, 12:58.98), Jason Finta (21st 12:59.12) and Brandon Valdez (22nd, 13:05.10).

All were personal records.

Whitney was scheduled to host Rocklin in the annual jog-a-thon 7-9:30 p.m. Friday in honor of former Rocklin athlete Heidi Greenwood.
