HUSKIES TOP FALCONS TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

ACCIDENT — Northern Garrett finally had its first home football game of the season last Friday night, as the Homecoming festivities served as a welcoming backdrop for the Huskies’ 34-14 victory over the Frankfort Falcons. The win moves the Huskies to 4-0 on the season, and it is the second year in a row they have achieved this mark. The team has also never trailed all year, so far. The first half seemed to be business as usual for the Huskies, as they strung together several time-killing scoring drives, complemented by a swarming defense that kept the Falcons pinned back. On the Huskies’ opening drive, a pair of first down carries from Peyton Carr and Carsyn King helped set the tone and moved the ball down to the Frankfort 39-yard line. A couple of plays later, Carr dropped back to pass and found Jimmy Spear down the near sideline for a 36-yard touchdown connection. Micah Rollan’s point-after attempt was good, and the Huskies led 7-0 at the 8:40 mark in the first quarter. Five minutes later, Spear found the end zone again from 29 yards out, this time on a pass from freshman Jake Rush, to make it 13-0. The Huskies opened the second quarter with a big defensive stop on third down before taking over on their own 26 following a punt. Sam Beeman nearly broke the game open on a long run, but he was tackled at the 44. King followed with another first-down carry on the next play. The Huskies continued to navigate their way down the field before King eventually plunged across the goal line from a yard out. The two-point conversion was intercepted, making the score 19-0 with 5:44 left in the half. Frankfort was able to answer on its next possession, however. Faced with a third down in Husky territory, Wyatt Yates found Nick Corwell across the middle for a 36-yard touchdown catch-and-run with 2:25 to play. The successful PAT from Braden Aldridge made it 19-7. The Huskies tried to move the ball downfield on the next possession, but a fumble gave the Falcons another chance to trim the deficit. With 23 seconds until the break, Frankfort did just that when Nick Marley galloped into the end zone from 21 yards away to make it 19-14 at the half. Neither team yielded points in the back-and-forth third quarter, but the final 12 minutes would belong to the Huskies. Just over a minute into the game’s final quarter, Carr took off and raced 44 yards to seize all the momentum for the Huskies, who now led 26-14 following Rollan’s PAT. Then with just 4:09 remaining, King once again knifed his way into the end zone from a yard out and Beeman followed by a two-point conversion run to close the game’s scoring. Northern outgained Frankfort 372-186 in total offense. Carr accounted for a game-high rushing total of 129 yards on 13 carries, followed closely by King’s 124 yards on 18. Beeman’s 15 carries would amass 46 yards for the Huskies. Defensively, the Huskies were once again led by senior linebacker Bryce Jones who recorded 13 tackles. Carr earned 11 tackles to go with his interception, and Garrett Emory and Ian Eggleston had eight tackles apiece. For the Falcons, Dalton Pollock led their ground game with 92 yards on 16 carries, while Marley ended up with 66 yards on 15. The undefeated Huskies have a bye week Friday. They’ll resume action on Oct. 6 when they travel to Moorefield to face the Yellow Jackets. Moorefield is currently 0-5 with losses to common opponents Frankfort (47-7), Southern (40-0) and Tucker County (20-10). During last year’s meeting, Northern cruised to a 46-0 home victory over Moorefield.
