PEQUANNOCK — Dave Jachera and Sean Klimek ran well for football players who had been “shot in the foot.”

The speedy senior duo accounted for four of Pequannock’s five touchdowns in a 36-7 NJSFC cross-divisional victory over Ramsey on Friday night. Jachera threw for two scores and ran 10 times for 57 yards and a 12-yard TD to cap the scoring.

Klimek led a strong defensive showing with an early second-quarter interception, which set up a drive that ended with a knee-buckling 30-yard touchdown run. The halfback/cornerback carried 18 times for 124 yards.

"They’re phenomenal football players,” Golden Panthers coach Ed Kopp said of the pair, who also led the school’s baseball team in stolen bases last spring.

“The hole isn’t always there for them, they play doesn’t always go where it’s intended. But they have the ability to make guys miss, and they do a phenomenal job for us.”

Pequannock overcame 13 penalties in the game to improve to 2-0.

Jachera’s 21-yard TD pass to Matthew Spatucci on the opening drive was a well-executed play action. His second scoring toss, 35 yards to Matt Unger to open the fourth quarter, came on an extended scramble.

“Our offense is either, we’re super-efficient, or it’s a big play here and there,” Jachera said. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot, but we played well enough to get a win.”

Ramsey (2-1) drove into Pequannock territory three times in the first half but was turned away on Klimek’s INT, a Joe Leszczynski fumble recovery and a turnover on downs.

“We had the opportunities, and we didn’t make the plays,” Rams coach Anthony Petrock said. “I’m proud of our kids, but we lost to a better team.”

Turning point: The Rams received the second-half kickoff but went three-and-out. Matt Gallo returned the ensuing punt 60 yards for a touchdown, and Klimek added a two-point conversion on a “swinging gate” play to make it 22-0 Pequannock.

Key stat: Jachera and Klimek combined for 181 yards rushing. Combined passing and rushing, Ramsey had 172 yards in total offense, which included 3-of-10 passing for 65 yards.

Quotable: “Holding them to seven points was huge. That pick was very big, the fumble recovery when they were in the red zone was huge. Defense wins championships, that’s basically it – and they held their ground [Friday night] and did awesome.” – Klimek on the Golden Panthers’ defense
