COWETA TIGERS OPEN DISTRICT PLAY WITH A WIN OVER DURANT

Rebounding from a tough performance last week, the Coweta Tigers thumped the Durant Lions on the road Friday night 40-14, with six different Tigers scoring touchdowns. Getting the offense into production mode, Coweta rushed 32 times for 135 yards, led by Spencer Harrington with 23 carries for 120 yards. J.D. Geneva completed 15 passes in 31 attempts for 303 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing two interceptions. Senior placekicker Gabe Reed toed two field goals and was successful on four of five extra point attempts as the Tigers got the 4A-3 District race off to a positive start. Reed’s field goals covered 24 and 32 yards. Senior Ty Decker led the receiving corps with six catches for 141 yards and a 45-yard touchdown. Sophomore Thomas Ivy had five receptions for 111 yards and a 24-yard touchdown. Blake Lair caught one pass for 32 yards, Seth Marrujo caught one for a 13-yard touchdown and Harrington caught two passes for six yards. Reed kicked his 24-yard field goal in the opening quarter for a 3-0 Coweta lead. Durant took a brief lead in the second quarter when Jeremy Seward caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Cade Buchanan. With the extra point kick by Dax Chapman, the Lions led 7-3. Responding quickly, the Tigers gained the advantage to stay when Ivy hauled in a 24-yard pass from Geneva for a 9-7 lead after the extra point kick failed. Geneva connected with Marrujo for his 13-yard touchdown and Reed booted the extra point for a 16-7 Coweta lead at intermission. Reed’s 32-yard field goal was the only Tiger score in the third quarter, raising the advantage to 19-7 before Durant struck again with the Seward-Buchanan connection. Their TD and PAT narrowed the deficit to 19-14. Fourth quarter action was all Coweta with Decker’s 45-yard reception from Geneva and Reed’s kick, making the advantage 26-14. Senior defensive secondary Micah Thomas put the defense on the scoreboard with an 86-yard interception return for a touchdown. Reed added the kick for a 33-14 Coweta lead. To finish off the important district win, Edwards ran five yards to score and Reed kicked the extra point for the final margin of victory. Homecoming will be the featured event as the Tigers host Noble Friday, Sept. 29 at Tiger Field. Always an exciting time for the student body and fans as well, the coronation of a king and queen will take place prior to the start of the game. Going through non-district play with a 3-0 record, Noble defeated Newcastle 35-21, Chickasha 42-13 and Piedmont 12-3. Opening 5A-3 district action, the Bears hosted the struggling McAlester Buffaloes. The Bears roared to a 48-7 win over the Buffaloes. Other District 5A-3 results saw Glenpool get its first 5A win, defeating Tulsa Edison 29-14 on Thursday night and Shawnee defeated Tulsa East Central, 35-10. Noble is a pre-season pick to finish fourth in the district after claiming a second place finish last season, sending the Coweta Tigers on the road to open the playoffs. The Bears finished 8-3 and return running back/linebacker Danny Arebalo who combined for 1,330 yards rushing and receiving. Their winning season last year was their first since 2007. Also returning to strengthen their attack are Tim Johnson at tackle, Hunter Largent at center-nose guard, Lucas McGinnis at linebacker, Logan Tougas at guard, Ethan Wallace at linebacker, Isaiah Willhoite at wide receiver/cornerback and Gavin Yeager at defensive end.
