Frankfort High and Western Hills were in a tight battle for a half, but the Wolverines pulled away late to take a 41-14 victory Friday night at WHHS.

“I thought in the first half Frankfort played really, really well,” Western Hills coach Don Miller. “They did a great job on defense stopping us and keeping everything contained.

“We had to make some adjustments at halftime. Defensively we went to a 40 front in the second half. In the first half we had a couple of defensive alignment miscues, so we decided to simplify it a little more and go with the 40 front.”

It was Frankfort that threatened first, driving the ball to the WHHS 5-yard line before losing it on a fumble.

On FHS’ next possession, the Panthers had the ball at the Wolverines’ 14-yard line when Bryce Edmondson intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.

The point-after kick failed, and WHHS led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wolverines went up 14-0 early in the second quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by J’Len Youngblood and a conversion run by Edmondson.

With 3.8 seconds left in the first half, Frankfort scored on a 4-yard run by John Tillman to get right back in the game.

WHHS led 14-6 at halftime.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my team,” FHS coach Craig Foley said. “I think we took 14 points off the scoreboard in the first quarter, but the effort was there.

“We played without two starters who were out for various reasons, but we put two other people in, and I couldn’t be more proud of the effort.”

WHHS scored twice in the third quarter, on a 13-yard run by Wandale Robinson and a 38-yard pass from Youngblood to Chandler Johnson. Tommy Fricker had the PAT after both scores.

In the fourth quarter Robinson scored on runs of 85 and 4 yards with Fricker kicking the point-after on one touchdown.

Frankfort scored the final touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run by Brandon Mack with 2:07 left in the game. DaJuan Davis ran for the conversion.

“I hate these games,” Foley said of the in-town rivalry games. “They don’t mean anything in the long run and the kids get too emotional, but this will help get us ready for districts.”

Frankfort doesn’t begin district play until Oct. 13 at home against Louisville Holy Cross.

The Wolverines’ first district game is Oct. 6 at Lexington Catholic.

Next week Western Hills (3-1) plays at Woodford County while Frankfort (3-2) travels to Newport.
