Defense breakdown
Fleming County breaks through Lady Panthers
Fleming County’s girls soccer team scored two goals less than a minute apart in the first half Wednesday, and that was all it needed.

Fleming (9-2) went on to defeat Frankfort 4-1 at Sower Soccer Complex, spoiling FHS’ Senior Night.

“It feels like I’m saying the same thing,” FHS coach Daniel Rogers said, “but it comes down to numbers and fatigue.

“We played well, but we had a couple of defensive breakdowns, and unfortunately they were able to capitalize on them.”

Fleming’s Maleah Hendrix scored the first goal of the match with 25 minutes left in the first half. About a minute later, a shot from Lauren Applegate gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

“We controlled the ball the first 20 minutes of the match,” Rogers said. “We just couldn’t put one in the net. We were stringing together passes. We’re starting to improve, but we’re not there yet.”

Fleming extended its lead to 3-0 with 15 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Maggie Hamilton.

Frankfort got on the board with a shot by Ellen Williams about 4½ minutes later, and the score was 3-1 at halftime.

Fleming’s Grace Hay scored the only goal of the second half early in the period.

“Grace Edelen played a great game,” Rogers said. “She played with a really good energy and effort level. Faith (Bowen), for being sick, was able to give us some good minutes.

“Ellen had some good opportunities, and Maysia Harris gave us some good minutes as well.”

Frankfort is now 2-9-1 with five matches left in the regular season.

“We just couldn’t score,” FHS junior Ella Lemley said. “We’re better than we were at the beginning of the season. Grace is new. She’s really good and hasn’t played that much before.” Edelen joined the team after the season started.

In a ceremony prior to Wednesday’s match, FHS honored its seniors, Williams and Hannah Jackson.

Frankfort’s next match is Saturday morning against Bullitt Central at the Panther Athletic Complex.

“We’re progressing,” Rogers said. “I was pleased with the effort level, and that’s something we’ve stressed the last few weeks.”
