CLAREMORE GLIDES PAST GLENPOOL 3-0

With Glenpool coming in supporting a 1-25 record, it took 10th-ranked Claremore a little while to muster some enthusiasm. The Lady Zebras finally did shake their ho hum attitude late in sets two and three, dumping the Warriors 3-0 Thursday night in high school volleyball. Claremore cruised to a 25-14 victory in set one, then won 25-21 and 25-20, improving to 14-12 for the season. Behind 5-foot-10 sophomore Brooke Jones and an imposing front line consisting of 6-2 Lauren and 6-0 Maddie Hardage, 5-10 Hailey Charles and 5-9 Madison Dugan, the Zebras dominated at the net. Jones finished with nine kills, three aces, two blocks and a tipped shot for a point in leading the way for Claremore. “I think we got a little too comfortable and we should have played a lot better,’’ said CHS coach Victoria Giron. “We had nine missed serves in three sets and our goal is two. We gave up too many points we shouldn’t have, but our program is building in the right direction.’’ The Z’s opened a 17-11 lead in the third set before Glenpool rallied to come within 22-20 on a hitting error by the home team. Claremore bore down on a kill from Lauren Hardage and consecutive aces by freshman Brooke Dugan to close out the Warriors. “We had a lot of unforced errors, but we were aggressive on our hitting,’’ said Giron. “Our defense has improved a lot this year and we got a lot out of Brooke Jones tonight. She’s one of the strongest assets on our team. “We have a lot of room for improvement, but we pulled it out. We’re definitely getting better.’’ The Zebras struggled to win the second set, trailing 18-13 and 20-16 before scoring nine of the final 10 points. A pair of aces by Jones and a tip at the net by Madison Dugan produced a 20-20 tie. Junior Dani Meisinger followed with a kill and Claremore was never caught. Marich Gilbreath and Riley Renfroe teamed for a block and a 22-20 lead. Gilbreath blocked an attempt by the Warriors’ Tristan Winters to finish the set. Claremore broke out to a 7-1 lead in the first set and eased to win it, scoring the final four points on a kill and tip by Jones, a hitting violation against the Warriors and a kill from Charles. In other Rogers County games, it was Wagoner over Verdigris 3-2 and Inola over Locust Grove 3-0.
