LAKE WALES QB CHAYIL GARNETT AIRED IT OUT ON FRIDAY

1 Lake Wales sophomore quarterback Chayil Garnett (football) made few mistakes in the Highlanders’ season-opening victory over St. Cloud. Garnett completed 22-of-29 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 20 yards for a touchdown. He spread the ball around, completing passes to six receivers 2 Lake Wales senior Paul Stafford (cross country) is off to a strong start to the 2017 season by nearly setting a course record on the difficult Holloway Park course. He ran 15.54.80 to win the boys’ race and finish less than a second off the course record of 15.54.10. 3 Haines City sophomore running back Steven Cesar (football) led the Hornets’ dominating ground game in their 52-6 victory over Lake Region. Cesar rushed for 253 yards and four touchdowns on just 15 carries with a long run of 83 yards. Haines City finished with 477 yards on the ground. 4 Ridge senior Yannie Scott (football) is the Bolts’ quarterback, but it was his legs that were most effective. He ran for 144 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 carries as Ridge piled up 341 yards in its 40-6 victory over Bartow. 5 Santa Fe Catholic junior running back Miles Thompson (football) was unstoppable in the Crimson Hawks’ victory over All Saints. He rushed for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, accounting for all but 30 of Santa Fe’s rushing yards. 6 Lakeland junior Molly Raven (volleyball) made a big splash in her match at her new school. Raven, who transferred from Santa Fe Catholic, led the Dreadnaughts with 21 kills and added eight digs in their 25-11, 25-8, 25-23 victory over George Jenkins. 7 Winter Haven senior Hope Gorby (volleyball) had an all-around effort with nine kills, two aces and 18 digs in a 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 opening win vs. McKeel. She followed up with 16 kills and 16 digs against Ridge. 8 Lakeland Christian senior outside hitter Libby Norman (volleyball) got off to a strong start as she had 14 kills to lead the Vikings in their season-opening, four-set victory over McKeel, 16-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-17. She also had five blocks and 10 digs. 9 McKeel middle hitter Makenna Anderson (volleyball) had a busy week with three matches. She finished the week with 28 kills, including 10 in the Wildcats’ victory over Ridge, six aces and seven blocks. 10 Jordan Christian senior Zaequarious Brown (football) was a force both running the ball and catching the ball. He touched the ball six times for 163 yards from scrimmage with 88 yards on two receptions and 75 yards on four carries.
