David Lovette saw the film. He didn’t like what he was looking at.

Winless after two tough weeks, the Gray’s Creek coach knew breaking the skid against Jack Britt wasn’t going to be as simple as the Buccaneers’ similar 0-2 mark might have suggested.

“They were scary on film,” Lovette said. “They just didn’t quite have it, yet. They’d drop a fade here, drop a post there. They had it beat, and they didn’t do it. They caught them against us, though.”

Jack Britt overwhelmed the Bears on Saturday afternoon, 41-12, behind a dynamic display of big-play abilities. The film Lovette was referring to was Jack Britt’s 21-0 loss at Terry Sanford in which the Bucs actually outgained the high-powered Bulldogs.

Jack Britt outgained Gray’s Creek 348-315 despite a time-of-possession deficit. Those yards came in enormous chunks.

Glenn Young’s first touch of the game resulted in an 80-yard touchdown run. His fourth and final tote was a 70-yard work of art that included a spin move and hurdle that left the crowd and sidelines gasping.

“All I heard was everybody saying, ‘ooh’ and I took off,” Young said. “I’ll have to look at the film. It was natural to me … whatever it was.”

Young’s second touchdown staked the Bucs to a 21-0 lead. In between his scores, quarterback Brennan Shortridge connected with Barry Elliott on a 35-yard touchdown. Chancellor Johnson wrapped up an dominant first half with a 25-yard touchdown run.

Shortridge said the week leading up to the game was spent with the offense not being allowed off the field until it scored. Bucs coach Brian Randolph would start the drill at the 20-yard line and even if a player was tackled, they were to keep going until they reached the end zone.

“Last week we just couldn’t finish,” Shortridge said. “We were driving the ball down the field and doing everything, maintaining our assignments, but then we didn’t finish.”

An interesting irony: The Bucs found the end zone six times Saturday, none any closer than Johnson’s 25-yard run. Shortridge connected with Deshawn Curtis on a 35-yard touchdown and Malik Graddy returned a squibbed kickoff 65 yards for Jack Britt’s final points.

“They got the message,” Randolph said. “We get the ball and score. (The big plays) have always been there. We just haven’t been able to execute them in the game. The big thing is the offensive line played hard and gave Brennan time and he was able to get the ball to the other players. We have great skill guys.”

Young finished with 149 yards on four carries. Shortridge completed 7 of 11 passes for 103 yards as Jack Britt improved to 1-2.

Gray’s Creek generated 280 rushing yards, paced by Cedrick McDowell’s 106. Trey Beckett added 91. Each had a touchdown for the Bears, who fell to 0-3. The Bears had three other drives that reached the red zone, including one set up by a blocked punt, but came away with no points.

“They kept us from getting in, from scoring. We’d move the ball down to the 20-yard line and we couldn’t cash it in,” Lovette said. “I don’t know. I’m tired of losing. I don’t know what else to say.”
