Another tough match, another tough loss for Muskogee.

The Roughers spotted Ponca City one set, then played catch-up twice only to fall narrowly in the fifth set in what was a 3-2 decision at home Thursday.

“A microcosm of our season,” said Muskogee coach John Hammer, his team now 16-13. Ponca City is 7-9 with only four games against teams out of the top 15 in any class.

“Never a big swing, nearly every set was tied at some point. We fought back. We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

The biggest lead for either team was seven by Ponca in the third set when it led 9-2. Ponca won the first set 25-23 then Muskogee had the momentum after winning the second set 25-21, but the Wildcats charged to their biggest lead at 9-2 in the third en route to a 25-20 win.

The Lady Roughers won by the same margin in game four, setting up the tiebreaker set. At 14-13, PC got the game-winner.

“Got a good swing on the bball, their girl was 6-2 they covered and we covered short and the ball went deep. It was a tough match. We’ve had touch matches all year.”

The Roughers have lost four of five, three to 5A teams ranked 1-11 and then a four-set match to unranked 6A Bixby on Tuesday.

Madison Wiebe had 17 kills, Wren Seabolt 9 kills and seven digs, Jenna Winters had 22 assists and Cierra Lewis had six kills and nine digs.

Muskogee plays host to Broken Arrow on Tuesday.
