OWASSO – A popular yearly tradition returns to the softball diamond Thursday as Owasso hosts Enid at 7:30 p.m. for Military Night.

The United States Armed Forces will be recognized and honored throughout the evening and with special ceremony before the varsity game, which begins at 7:30. The Lady Rams will wear special uniforms recognizing the 43rd Armed Guard Reception Battalion of Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Owasso has visited Ft. Leonard Wood and gone through ha boot camp-style workout at the military base on their annual trip to a St. Louis softball tournament. Just last week, they made the trip once again and were crowned tournament champs.

Assistant coach Milt Denny said the special uniforms will be worn in appreciation for the Fort’s willingness to take time out of busy schedules to help players understand one of the first and most important experiences for new soldiers.

Here is some of what fans can expect to see Thursday evening at the Owasso High School Softball field, which is just east of the high school grounds on E. 86th Street N.

The Tinker Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the colors Thursday for the National Anthem, and choir members of Owasso’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades will sing.

- Each varsity player will present a gift of appreciation to a service member either during the reading of the line up or between innings.

- In keeping with Major League Baseball tradition, “God Bless America” will be performed by Owasso Choir Students Gabby King, Natalynn Moran, Laura Pannhoff, Ryleigh Spencer, and Caitlin Willits.

- WWII veteran and Navajo Code Talker Thomas H. Begay will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Mr. Begay served as a code talker during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The code talkers’ commitment to their country and their “unbreakable code” helped win the war in the Pacific.
