Three plays, five yards, Newton forced Hutchinson off the field in a hurry on the Salthawks’ opening drive.

The memory of the brief drive quickly evaporated after a Joesiah Galindo-led 13-play, 96 yard drive set the tone for a long night for the Railers. A 46-yard run by Galindo capitalized a 99-yard, two touchdown first half for the senior fullback in the runaway 41-7 victory over Newton Friday night.

“They got me,” Galindo said as he laughed on being tracked down on his long run. “Next time I’ll break it, but it was big game. We practiced hard all week and came out and won and did our thing.”

Quarterback Trevor Rhoades capped off the extended opening drive, but Galindo punched in the next two touchdowns for the Salthawks from 3 and 8 yards out. Galindo outgained Newton 99 to 90 in the first half. Galindo finished the night with 20 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

Rhoades cashed in his second touchdown of the night on a 23-yard keeper straight up the gut to stamp the 28-0 lead at halftime.

How the Salthawks were able to build the lead buried Newton. After the 13-play scoring drive, the Salthawks’ following three came on five plays each.

Railers’ quarterback Colton Davis put Hutchinson in terrific territory, throwing an interception on Newton’s 28 yard line. Tre’Vaughn Jones came away with the interception as he followed the eyes of Davis rolling out to his left. Davis tried to squeeze the ball into tight coverage, but Jones was able to step in front of the pass for the tip-toe grab on the sideline.

Newton also fumbled the ball after failing to corral a pooch kick by Hutchinson on the kickoff.

“We put our defense in bad situations,” said Newton coach Chris Jaax. “We lost a lot of momentum and after we lost momentum, we struggled. And we didn’t move the ball offensively. When you don’t move the ball offensively, you don’t bleed any time off the clock, defense gets warn out and that’s what happened tonight.”

Davis is coming off a game where he completed 21-of-31 for 177 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Maize. The Salthawks bottled up Davis, holding him to a 10-for-22 on the night for 89 yards to go along with his interception. Newton was able to score in mob up duty on a Davis keeper. He had 24 yards on 10 carries.

KEY STAT: Hutchinson ended the game early by taking a 28-0 lead at halftime. The Salthawks outgained the Railers 227 to 90 in the first half. After turning the ball over multiple times against Olathe East in the opener, Hutchinson had zero turnovers against Newton. Hutchinson ran for 308 yards.

RIDICULOUS: On the first series for Newton, quarterback Colton Davis threw the ball high and outside to wide receiver Warren Dietz. Dietz was able to adjust, extending his arm to tip the ball into the air. He was able to haul in the throw for the one hand, juggling catch.

PASS SIGHTING: First throw of the game for the Salthawks came with 4:55 to play in the second quarter on a 16-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Trevor Rhoades to Brody Smith. It was the only pass of the game for Rhoades.

GURU PACKAGE: Tre’Vaughn Jones is also a threat on offense for the Salthawks. When he’s in at quarterback, he has a strong arm to get it downfield and the legs to move. Head coach Ryan Cornelsen called the pass and Jones delivered a bomb to speedster Davian Vigil for the 44-yard touchdown pass.

COACH SPEAK: “I think they did a good job of stopping Brody (Smith) off-tackle, but that’s how our offense is. When you take something away, it opens up something else.” – Hutchinson Salthawks coach Ryan Cornelsen.

NEXT: Hutchinson is home against Salina Central. Newton heads to Goddard-Eisenhower.
