Last Week’s Games: Sand Springs lost to Choctaw, 21-20; PC West lost to PC North, 30-7

Game Notes: A break down in special teams was the difference in a 21-20 loss to Choctaw Friday at home. PK Jaden Wiser’s extra point was blocked, but the play took a little too long to develop, resulting in the blocked kick. RB Payton Scott carried the ball almost 40 times for 200-plus yards rushing and two TDs.

QB Caden Pennington looked confident and threw good passes to his receivers, but they couldn’t hold onto them. He threw his first varsity TD to TE Dash Fleischman, but had a costly interception at the end of the game.

PC West and Sand Springs have similar offenses in that they both run the ball a lot. In a loss to PC North Friday, the Patriots ran the ball 48 times for 231 yards, but they used seven running backs. Sophomore RB Anthony Johnson led with 93 yards on eight carries, but junior RB Arich Ansley scored the only TD. Junior QB O’neal Cotton was 3-4 with 38 yards and an interception.

Choctaw Game Break Down

WHAT WENT RIGHT

Running the ball: RB Payton Scott and RB Ben Nortey are a good 1-2 punch for the Sandite running game, and both have very different styles. Scott will run you over, and Nortey will try to outrun you. On Friday, Scott rushed for over 200 yards with two touchdowns, and Nortey had around 40 yards. The week before, they both rushed for over 100 yards with a combined three touchdowns.

Quarterback play: QB Caden Pennington looks like a seasoned veteran at times and is gaining confidence with every throw. He threw his first varsity touchdown pass to TE Dash Fleischman, getting that monkey off his back. Pennington threw to four different receivers -- WR Braden Millican, RB Scott, WR Aaron King and TE Fleischman.

Defensive pressure: The Sandite defense played well enough to win against Choctaw, and the highlight was an interception from LB Hayden Cramer. It was the Sandites first take-a-way of the season. DL Gage Fain, DL Kris Edwards, LB Jerry Lyons and LB Luke Bratcher pressured the Choctaw quarterback all night, resulting in several sacks.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Catch the ball: QB Caden Pennington has to get some help from his receivers. There were too many dropped passes from his receiving corps, and some were hit them right in the hands. Pennington is a young quarterback in his first season as the starter, and his confidence is building, but he needs his receivers to make simple catches that will extend drives.

Special teams: PK Jaden Wiser is settling in as the kicker, but he joined the team right before the season started. The deep snapper, holder and Wiser need to get on the same page for extra points and field goals. However, Wiser was 3-3 in the season opener and is 5-6 on the season.

Keep the lead: The Sandite led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but lost the lead with 5:37 to play in the game. After a Sand Springs punt, Choctaw drove 90 yards to take a 21-20 lead for the win.
