Playing on its home pitch for the first time since the Rotary Capital City Classic, Frankfort High’s boys soccer team turned back Bryan Station 6-1 Saturday at Sower Soccer Complex.

“Offensively, hats off to Bryan Station,” FHS coach Brad Kennedy said. “They did a good job of attacking. Thankfully our defense was able to keep them at bay for the most part and really restart our attack also.”

The Panthers never trailed Saturday.

FHS led 2-0 at halftime with goals by Maurice Walker (assist Reed Miklavcic) and Devin Craig (assist Walker).

Bryan Station cut Frankfort’s lead in half when Diallo Irakoze scored with 33 minutes left in the match, but that’s as close as the Defenders got.

Less than two minutes after Irakoze’s goal, Miklavcic scored on a free kick that covered at least 30 yards for a 3-1 lead.

Tomaz Donaldson scored with 28:20 remaining off an assist from Devin Craig, and Craig scored Frankfort’s last two goals to complete the hat trick. Miklavcic had the assist on both goals.

“We think we’re strong offensively,” Kennedy said. “We are probably going to score, and if our defense continues to play the way they are now, it gives us a lot of opportunities.”

With the win, Frankfort improves to 11-0.

“I don’t think anyone thought we’d be 11-0,” Kennedy said. “We knew we had the potential, but a lot of things have to fall into place for that to happen.

“Right now we’re playing really cohesive team soccer. All 11 guys on the field are fighting for each other, and that puts us in position for success.”

Frankfort takes on Woodford County in its next match Tuesday at Soccer Soccer Complex.

Garrard edges Lady Panthers
Frankfort High’s girls soccer team had chances early and late, but it was Garrard County that came away with the win Saturday.

The Lady Lions defeated FHS 2-1 at Sower Soccer Complex.

Trailing 2-1, the Lady Panthers had several opportunities to score in the final five minutes but weren’t able to convert.

“We picked it up in the last few minutes and were trying to get the tying goal,” FHS coach Daniel Rogers said. “Unfortunately we didn’t get one.

“A big problem is we didn’t capitalize in the first 15 minutes of the game. We got several shots on goal and had fresh legs, but some simple mistakes cost us in taking the lead in the game.”

Garrard (3-6) took a 1-0 lead about halfway through the first half on a goal by Marianna Cortez, and Frankfort tied the match on a goal by Ellen Williams about 10 minutes later with the assist going to Grace Edelen.

The score stayed 1-1 until Cortez picked up her second goal with 22:05 left in the match.

Frankfort had the Lady Lions on the defensive end in the last few minutes of the match.

“I definitely thought we were going to pull through and someone would put a shot in,” FHS’ Claire Irish said. “We were marking really well the last 10 minutes.”

“We’ve been working hard on pressuring the ball, and it definitely showed today,” Rogers said. “Claire, Zoe (Antenucci) and Grace, along with Ella (Lemley) and Bones (Madison Close), did a great job of holding down our defense.

“It was a back and forth match and was played on both ends of the field. I can’t complain about our play. We moved the ball well and did a lot more things well than we did bad.”

Frankfort (2-8-1) plays today at Collins.
