The Carlsbad Cavemen got their first win of the season against the Goddard Rockets, 19-18 Friday.

Head football coach Gary Bradley said the Cavemen were fortunate to pull off a victory in the last 18 seconds of the fourth quarter against the Rockets.

"It wasn't a pretty game. Both teams ran the ball quite a bit," Bradley said. "They actually had 20 more plays than we did and we were fortunate enough to get the victory in that case."

Bradley said the Cavemen struggled to find a rhythm following some big plays by Goddard.

Defensively the Cavemen held Goddard to under 150 total yards, but only managed one completion to get to the 2 yard line at the end of the fourth. Cavemen senior quarterback Jaykan Willis carried the ball into the endzone for the final and game-winning Cavemen touchdown.

"They controlled the clock with their offense. Their offense isn’t fancy but it's effective," Bradley said.

Cavemen running backs junior Tate Collins and senior Jake Bowen scored the other two touchdowns of the night.

The Cavemen are now 1-2 overall.

The Cavemen will face Cibola High School at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 for the annual Homecoming game and the last non-district game.

Students across the Carlsbad Municipal School district, along with teachers and staff, are expected to participate in Homecoming week activities prior to the game.
