LADY TIGER BATTLE BETWEEN COWETA, PRYOR GOES PRYOR'S WAY

Headed to St. Louis for weekend softball action, the Coweta Lady Tigers battled the defending 5A State Champion Pryor Lady Tigers on their home diamond early in the week. They competed strong before falling 5-3, with Pryor hitting three home runs. Senior shortstop Cheyenne Petty had the hit of the day for the Lady Tigers, blasting a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning. “(It was) Amazing today playing tough against the defending champions and their top ranked pitcher Olivia Raines,” Petty said after the game. “We were able to get seven hits to match them at the plate. They (Pryor) were able to get the long ball and that made the difference,” Coach Rod Bowen said. “We are trying each outing to play a complete game and through the first 12 today, we competed in every aspect of the game and gave ourselves a chance to win late," Bowen continued. "I am very pleased with the way we played. Katelyn Janes and Maddie Wheat are playing well right now.” Missing several games with a slight knee injury, Janes returned to the infield at second base in the Shawnee Tournament. Since returning she has blasted 10 hits, including a double, recorded three RBI and scored four runs. Pryor opened the scoring in the first with a home run by Raines, followed by another in the third. The visitors scored two runs in the fifth to lead 4-0 before Coweta exploded for three runs in the top of the sixth, narrowing the deficit to one run. Pryor added a third home run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win. Janes had two hits and a run; Wheat had an RBI double and scored a run and Madison Gray, Karsyn White and Ashlyn Oswald each completed hits. Lynzee Carmichael worked in the circle until late in the game. She allowed just seven hits, struck out five batters, walked five and allowed four earned runs. Kaylee Johnson finished the game with two hits allowed and one earned run. Coweta followed with a trip to face Tulsa Edison Prep, blasting 17 hits to seal a five inning 15-0 win. Kaylee Dodson pitched the first three innings before Johnson took the circle to complete the final two. Wheat and Gray went three-for-three and both blasted two home runs, giving Wheat five RBI and Gray three RBI. Kelsey Walenciak also hit a home run with Jaci Ross, Loryn Snelson and Johnson all recording doubles. Hannah Holmes, Jordyn Fleetwood and White added hits, while Leah Rasberry and Janes added two hits each. Last week the Lady Tigers competed in the Shawnee Tournament after the Broken Arrow Tournament was cancelled earlier in the season. Coweta went 2-2, losing twice the first day, but rallying for two wins on the second day. Facing Noble, the Lady Tigers lost 3-2. Carmichael went the full seven innings giving up seven hits while striking out seven, walking five and giving up three runs. Janes returned to the lineup after recovering from a slight knee injury and went three-for-four at the plate with an RBI. Snelson, Wheat, Petty, Karsyn White and Ashlyn Oswald all contributed hits, but there were no extra base hits. Against Woodward, the Lady Tigers committed three errors on the way to losing 5-3. Janes had two hits with a double, RBI and run scored while Petty also had two hits and scored a run. Johnson had an RBI double, with Leah Rasberry and White also recording hits. Johnson went the distance in the circle with six hits allowed, while striking out three, walking three and allowing just one earned run. Bethel was Coweta's third opponent and the Lady Tigers escaped with a 2-1 victory. Bethel scored one run in the top of the first and Coweta answered in the bottom of the fourth. The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the seventh when the Lady Tigers got a walk off victory. Wheat hit a two out single to centerfield and Gray blasted an RBI double to right field, scoring Wheat from first base. Wheat went two-for-four in the win and Snelson hit a double. Johnson went 3.1 innings in the circle, giving up one hit, striking out two, walking six and allowing one run. Carmichael finished with two hits allowed, one strike out, one walk and no runs allowed. To complete the Shawnee Tournament, Coweta defeated McAlester 8-0 with the Lady Tiger bats coming alive. Janes had two hits, an RBI and a run scored and Petty had two hits with a triple, three RBI and a run scored. Snelson, Wheat, Gray (triple) and Rasberry added hits. Carmichael pitched the shutout, allowing three hits, striking out four and walking two. The Lady Tigers (9-5) will finish off the week in St. Louis, Mo. at the Cor Jesu Tournament, where they are scheduled to play four games. They return home to host Skiatook on Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will travel to Verdigris Sept. 9 for 11 a.m. non-district action. On Monday, Sept. 11 the Lady Tigers will host Glenpool at 5 p.m. Defending 5A State Champion Pryor will come to Coweta Tuesday, Sept. 12. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
