BLOOMINGTON — Run-heavy in the first half and pass-heavy in the second half, the Bloomington High School football team put a lot of weight on the scoreboard Friday at Fred Carlton Field.

BHS piled up 594 yards of total offense while rolling past Champaign Central, 56-35.

“The offense looked really good,” Purple Raiders coach Joe Walters said. “We had a ton running and probably could have done more of it. But the passing looked good too.”

Tailback Holden Snyder rushed for 201 yards on 32 carries, and quarterback Colton Sandage passed for 215 of his 280 yards after halftime as BHS improved to 3-1 overall and in the Big 12 Conference.

“Coach (Luke) Drone did a good job calling the offense, mixing it up,” said Walters. “I probably would have ran the ball the whole night. He did a good job taking some risks.”

Snyder carried the ball on BHS’ first 12 plays and on 18 of the first 19 plays from scrimmage. Snyder totaled 109 yards on 20 first-half carries, including a 4-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.

Sandage, who also was perfect on seven extra point kicks, tossed a 31-yard scoring strike to Drew Crooks for a 14-0 lead. A 62-yard touchdown bomb from Luke McMahon to Drew Adams brought the Maroons (0-3, 0-3) within 14-7 entering halftime.

Sandage was wide with a 26-yard field goal attempt late in the first half.

After Champaign completed a fake punt pass for 17 yards on fourth-and-28, BHS marched to the Maroons’ 7 before the second quarter clock hit all zeroes.

A frenzied second half featured 70 points.

“Defensively, the 21 points we gave up in the heat of it were two blown coverages and a blitz gone wrong,” Walters said. “Three mistakes, three touchdowns.

“They are a good enough team to do that. We have a couple things to clean up, but I think we’re improved defensively.”

Putting the ball back in Snyder’s hands produced touchdown surges of 13, 10 and 6 yards as the BHS advantage ballooned to 49-21.

The Maroons received a 3-yard touchdown run from Tarell Evans and a 55-yard scoring pass to Max Herr in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders’ final touchdown came on a determined 7-yard scoring charge from Griffin Moore.

BHS converted fourth down plays of 6, 2, 7 and 5 yards to keep drives alive and did not attempt a punt.

Kolic finished with 122 yards receiving on five catches. Crooks added 70 yards on three receptions, and James Ellis had three catches for 63 yards.

McMahon completed 5 of 8 passes for 198 yards. Milton rushed for 120 of his 128 yards in the second half.
