JENKINS ROUTS BARTOW IN SHORTENED GAME 34-7

The game was originally slated for Friday but was postponed because of lightning around Memorial Stadium in Bartow. Jenkins is now 2-0 on the season under second-year head coach Chris Canning. “I am excited for our kids, community and school. It is just been a great start for our team,” Canning said. “The kids came out and played hard. They were disappointed we couldn’t play Friday. Bartow came out early and hit us hard getting a score. When we had to play from behind, it tested our character to see where these guys were. And they responded and responded well.” Bartow scored when quarterback Davin Williams lofted a high spiral down the Jenkins’ sidelines where Daniel Everett out-leaped and out-wrestled Eagles’ defensive back Sincere McCall for the ball. Everett reset his footing and raced down the sidelines for the score just 50 seconds into the game. “It was just a play that we took advantage of from watching film. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take more of an advantage. We just had too many mental mistakes and lapses,” Bartow head coach Ray Tiller said. But Jenkins quickly answered when TJ Odom returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for the tying touchdown, and the Eagles were on their way. On their next possession, Eagles quarterback Jackson Morgan hit senior wide out Zach Tallent with a 37-yard touchdown pass to give Jenkins a 14-7 lead with 5:16 left in the first quarter. From there, Jenkins scored three more times in the second quarter, fullback Xzavier Allen, a transfer from Lakeland, scored on a pair of 3-yard plunges and Dywonski McWilliams scored on a 7-yard run with 15 seconds remaining in the first half. “Our offense is jelling even though we have a young offensive line and just some young kids who are starting to play together well,” Canning said. “Our defense came out and played great. We missed some tackles so we have to improve. We have some schools like Lakeland and Ridge coming up, so we have to get ready.” Jenkins will travel to Lake Region Friday and Bartow will travel to Sebring still searching for its first win. “It seems right now our kids don’t handle distractions too well with it being a rain delay from last week. Playing on Monday, we weren’t focused the way we should be. Now we have a game in four days and we have to go back at it,” Tiller said.
