COWETA LADY TIGERS RETURN HOME, DEFEAT SKIATOOK 5-3

Coweta’s Lady Tigers finally opened their home slate at Tiger Field with an exciting come-from-behind win, overcoming a 3-0 deficit to win 5-3 over the Skiatook Lady Bulldogs in 5A district play. Skiatook broke out on top with one run in the top of the first and two in the second to post a quick 3-0 lead. Coweta answered with a run in the bottom of the first off singles by catcher Loryn Snelson and shortstop Cheyenne Petty, followed by an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield by first baseman Karsyn White. Coweta broke on top 4-3 in the fourth inning with third baseman Leah Rasberry reaching on an error to set up a two-out rally. Snelson walked and White blasted a two-RBI double to centerfield. Madison Wheat led off the fifth with a single, followed by a single by Madison Gray that set up an RBI double by Petty for the final run. Lynzee Carmichael went the first 1.1 innings giving up five hits and all three runs before being relieved in the circle by Kaylee Johnson. Johnson allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings to capture the win with six strikeouts and two walks allowed. Coweta moved to 13-6 for the season as Katelyn Janes and Kelsey Walenciak added hits in a 10-hit win. “We were pretty much road-weary our fourth game at St. Louis. We were just done but it was really good to see us come back today against Skiatook in a game we really needed to win after losing to them earlier in the season,” Head Coach Rod Bowen said after the win. “All of our district games are tough, everyone is beating everyone else. Several teams are right there in the hunt to host a regional,” Bowen continued. “I felt like we played our best game in a loss at Pryor against the defending 5A champions. “Today we got great relief work from Kaylee Johnson. She is definitely comfortable in the circle coming into the game, she is always ready and seems to be able to get out of jams.” Over the Labor Day weekend the Lady Tigers traveled to St. Louis to compete in the Cor Jesu Academy Tournament. Coweta won three straight before losing their final game on Saturday afternoon. Facing host Cor Jesu in their opener, the Tigers won a thriller 4-3 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning by second baseman Janes. Cor Jesu scored one run in the first, second and sixth innings to lead 3-0 before the Lady Tigers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth with key hits coming from Gray (double) and Rasberry (single). Gray went 3/3 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and a run; Janes was 2/4 with a double, RBI and run; Jordyn Fleetwood was 1/1 with a double and run and Walenciak was 1/3 with a double and run scored. Carmichael went 5.1 innings in the circle allowing five hits, while striking out two, walking one and allowing three runs. Johnson finished the final 1.2 innings with no hits allowed, struck out two and did not walk a batter or allow a run. Second game action saw Coweta defeat Affton 10-3 with a quick start. Coweta scored two in the top of the first, but Affton came back with three in the bottom of the first, chasing Carmichael from the circle with three hits allowed, one strike out, one walk and three runs allowed. Johnson finished the game allowing one hit, striking out six and walking two without a run allowed. Coweta blasted their way to seven more runs in the second and one in the fourth. Wheat was 2/4 with an RBI and run; Walenciak went 2/3 with two doubles, an RBI and run; Janes doubled with an RBI and run; Snelson doubled with three RBI and a run; Gray doubled with two RBI and a run; Petty doubled with an RBI and a run; Hanna Holmes and Rhilee Denton each had a single. Third game action was a 12-4 win over Lindbergh, with Coweta scoring five runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. Lindbergh scored in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Kaylee Dodson started in the circle for 2.2 innings. She allowed three hits with no strikeouts, one walk and two runs allowed. Johnson finished the last 4.1 innings, allowing two hits, striking out six, walking one and allowing two runs. The Lady Tigers blasted 16 hits, including three home runs by Carmichael, Johnson (3 RBI) and Petty. Wheat added a double, with hits scattered throughout the roster by Rasberry, Janes, Kaitlyn Jared, Holmes, Gray, Jaci Ross, Denton, Walenciak and White. Final action against TBD saw the Lady Tigers run into a challenge, getting shut out 7-0. Coweta had only four hits in the game. Gray went 2/3 with two doubles and Janes and Wheat each had a hit. Carmichael went 1.2 innings in the circle, giving up three hits and three runs without a strikeout and walking two batters. Johnson went the final 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out two and walking two. TBD scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth behind nine hits. Next action for the Lady Tigers will be Thursday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. hosting Tulsa Edison, followed by home action Monday, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. hosting Shawnee and Tuesday at 5 p.m. hosting Claremore.
