Fans of Wilkes Central football got a late Labor Day present Monday evening in Moravian Falls, as the Eagles dispatched Surry Central 34-19 in nonconference football action.
The Eagles, in a game which was moved from last Friday due to rainy weather, started slowly, and only held a 7-6 lead at halftime.
But Wilkes Central surged ahead in a dominant third quarter. The lead swelled to seven with 6:52 left in the third when Tyler Boles scored on a 23-yard run down the right sideline.
The next Surry Central possession ended when Wilkes Central's Anthony Lopez picked off Golden Eagles' quarterback Martin Palacios, and the home team turned that miscue into another touchdown, this time off an eight-yard run up the gut from Evan Howell.
Another score from the shifty, speedy Boles ended the third after the Golden Eagles had tacked on a touchdown of their own. But the 27-13 Wilkes Central lead after three quarters was enough, and the home team cruised through the final period for the win.
Wilkes Central now stands at 2-1 on the season, while Surry Central dropped to 0-3.
