Mason City girls swimming coach Steve Hugo had a lot of question marks entering the season, but after four meets, the veteran coach is starting to uncover some of the answers.

Against Des Moines Roosevelt on Tuesday, the Mohawks won all three relays and added three more victories in individual events in a 53-48 loss.

Mason City actually held a slight advantage in the swimming events but did not enter a diver and the resulting seven team points the Roughriders earned with first and second place finishes in the event proved to be the difference in the team scoring.

“We are finding things out every meet,” Hugo said. “We can put together three decent relays.”

One of the things that Hugo is learning is that he has a core of young swimmers who are stepping to the forefront.

Paige and Madison Braun, a pair of sophomores who both were limited by some health issues a season ago, have emerged as two of the likely mainstays on the relays after contributing on all three of them.

Additionally, Paige turned in a time of 26.93 to take first in the 50 freestyle while Madison won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.36.

Nia Litterer, a freshman, joined the Braun sisters on the 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle and a third in the 100 butterfly.

Thea Lunning, a junior, swam legs on both freestyle relays and added an individual win in the 100 butterfly and a second in the 500 freestyle.

“Thea was a second faster in the butterfly and six seconds faster in the 500,” Hugo said. “We are going to try her in those again.”

Mohawk swimmers turned in 56 personal best performances on the night.

Mason City travels to the Linn-Mar Invite on Marion on Saturday.

The Mohawks return home on Sept. 26 when they will host Marshalltown.
