Senior quarterback Holt Hammons threw the ball with an accuracy that would make some college QBs blush, junior newcomer DaJuan Davis led a deep and gifted receiving corps, and senior defensive end/running back Tremayne Jones was all over the field in leading the Frankfort Panthers by the Grant County Braves, 42-6, Saturday night in bowl-game action at Bourbon County High School. The Frankfort defense gave up ground at times — allowing Grant County to rush for 174 yards on 43 tries — but the Panthers’ offense was quite a sight to behold as FHS improved to 2-0. Frankfort gashed the Braves’ defense to the tune of 354 yards. Hammons was nearly flawless, completing 14 of 18 passes for 216 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Three of his TD passes went to Davis, covering 58, 7 and 6 yards, respectively. Hammons’ other touchdown throw covered 25 yards to junior wideout Jevon Bush, putting Frankfort up 14-0 early in the second quarter. In all, Hammons’ passes went to six different receivers. Davis led with four catches for 83 yards; Bush had three receptions for 49 yards; junior John Tillman caught three passes for 29 yards, and Jones had two catches for 28 yards. It was quite an exhibition of pitch and catch between Hammons and his wideouts. “It was a good team performance,” said Hammons, who was good last year and looks quite a bit better than that now. “All the receivers ran their routes precisely; the line gave me plenty of time, and they just caught the ball. I was just putting it out there for our athletes, and they made plays.” “Holt is really solid,” said Frankfort head coach Craig Foley, who moved into second place by himself in career victories at FHS with 116. “He worked hard in the offseason, and he’s everything we hoped he would be at this point. Obviously there’s room for improvement. I’d like to see him run the ball a little bit better. But he does a great job throwing the ball; he knows our offense and he stays calm under pressure.” Foley gives credit to the Panthers’ improvement at wide receiver to assistant coaches Mike Mayes and Jamir Davis. “They do an excellent job coaching those kids up,” Foley said of Mayes and Davis. “Our wideouts are potentially very, very good … maybe the best group of receivers we’ve had in my tenure at Frankfort.” Asked about the improvement on the outside this fall, Hammons referred to Davis, who’s in his first year at FHS. Hammons and Davis connected on a 58-yard deep ball on Frankfort’s first play from scrimmage that put the Braves on their heels from the get go. “Clearly, we have DaJuan Davis, who’s a huge addition from last year,” Hammons said. Foley said it’s too soon to call Davis a go-to receiver for the Panthers, but then Foley added: “He’s, by far, a special kid. “But he has to understand that at some point teams are going to start scheming to take him away, and that’s going to open it up for somebody else, and he just has to be patient.” The other Panther scores Saturday came on runs of 2 yards by Jones that blew the game open for FHS at 21-0 midway through the second quarter, and a 4-yard run by junior Lyndell Wiley that put FHS out front 35-0 early in the third period. Foley wasn’t as pleased with Frankfort’s rushing attack, though it netted 138 yards. Jones led the way with 65 yards on 10 carries, and diminutive senior back Brandon Mack powered his way to 60 yards on eight tries. Sophomore place kicker Reed Miklavcic drilled all four of his extra-point tries. The Panthers converted one two-point conversion on a run by Davis. Jones was chosen the game’s MVP for Frankfort, both for his running and for his tackle-everything-but-the-kitchen sink effort at defensive end. The Braves were not able to complete a pass all night against the FHS secondary — compiling all of their 174 yards on the ground. Senior back Austin Smith led the way for Grant County with 85 yards on 20 carries, including a 2-yard run late for the Braves’ lone touchdown. Foley is happy with what he sees so far from his team. “I really like this group of kids,” he said. “The are very coachable, they’re athletic, for once they have a little alpha dog in them that we’ve missed the last couple years. “I’m real excited about where we can go.” Frankfort returns home Friday to play North College Hill from Cincinnati.
