The Permian football team opened its second week of fall camp on Monday.

However, the biggest difference from Week 1 to Week 2 — the Panthers have an opponent scheduled for Friday.

Permian will face Lubbock-Cooper for a scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Pirate Stadium.

Blake Feldt — the head coach of the Panthers — said the team won’t go through the same preparations as it will next week when the Panthers host Austin Vandegrift for the regular-season opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at Ratliff Stadium.

“We are still in camp and usually we aren’t in school right now,” Feldt said. “We usually have two weeks of camp and finish fall camp with the scrimmage and that’s still our approach.

“Even though school started, we are still in fall camp mode.”

For 6-foot-6 sophomore receiver Nakavieon White, this will mark his first varsity scrimmage.

White caught five passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns — including the game-winning score — to help the Black Team win Permian’s Black-White spring game.

“I’m pretty confident,” White said. “I’m not really nervous. I’m going to try to do my best and do whatever I can to help us win.”

A year ago against the Pirates, Permian quarterback Steve Steen played a hand in six touchdowns, which included five passing and one rushing. Five of the six touchdowns traveled for more than 25 yards — and three were for 60-plus yards. The Panthers posted 11 touchdowns in the contest, while their defense gave up one.

Steen — the 6-foot senior starting signal-caller — isn’t dwelling last year’s success. He knows the team must perform well to walk off the turf at Pirate Stadium with a sense of accomplishment.

“It’s not about going out and necessarily winning on the scoreboard,” Steen said. “It’s about going out and getting everything down. Obviously, you want to go out and win a scrimmage, but at the same time we want to make sure we have all of our plays in and everything, and that we are rolling on offense. That’s bigger than just going out and winning on the scoreboard.”

Permian senior safety Ben Vore is relieved about the chance to face a group other than the Panthers’ first-team offense.

Permian’s first-team offense and defense have battled in drills throughout fall camp. Vore believes practicing against Brother Miller, Justin Hammond, Toddrick Robinson and White have helped the defense prepare for a multitude of playmakers.

“Our offense is really good, so it gives us a good look,” said Vore, who finished with 15 tackles and three pass breakups as a junior.

“Everyone is really excited. I just can’t wait to get on the field.”
