Stoughton High School junior wrestler Hunter Lewis has been busy this summer, earning three medals and All-American status.

Lewis – who was the WIAA D1 state runner-up at 113 pounds as a sophomore – traveled to the Pan American Cadet Championships July 7-9 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and took home two silvers at 110 pounds in Greco Roman and freestyle competition, helping Team USA finish first with 93 points.

Lewis came back to the United States for the USA Wrestling Cadet Greco Roman Championships July 19-21 at the Fargo Dome in North Dakota, and he won the gold medal at 113 pounds.

“It was important to stay on task and keep working and keep practicing to win the National Championship in Greco,” Lewis said.

Cadet Championships

Lewis went 1-1 in the Greco Roman portion of the Pan American Cadet Championships.

He defeated Elizon Rau Gonzalez Manzan (Venezuela) in an 8-0 major decision to make the championships after having a bye in the first round.

He dropped his finals match 8-5 to Jose Alber Moo Santamaria (Mexico).

Lewis finished 2-1 in a round robin of the freestyle bracket. He defeated Emanuel Nico Pintos (Argentina) in a 15-2 technical fall and pinned Gandy Yosdan Mallqui Amao (Peru) in two minutes.

Lewis’ only loss was to gold medal winner Lachlan Maur McNeil (Canada) in an 11-2 major decision.

For Lewis, the experience was a learning experience being in another country and getting use to the culture shock.

“It was a lot different in Argentina,” Lewis said. “But it was still a really cool experience.”

USA Cadet Nationals

Lewis finally got his gold a few weeks later in the USA Cadet Greco Roman Nationals.

Lewis defeated Conor Knopick (Nebraska) in a 10-0 technical fall in the finals to secure the 113-pound title and finished 7-0.

“It was really cool going and staying busy, reaching the goal of winning,” he said.

Lewis made the finals after defeating Adam Arenas (California) 18-8.

He started in the round of 128 with a 14-1 win over David Medina (Tennessee), and followed with a 10-0 win over John Seth (Washington) and a 10-0 win over Devon Casebolt (Indiana).

Lewis added a 10-4 win over Cameron Johnson (Illinois) and a 12-2 win over Sterling Quinn (Montana) to make the semifinals.

Now, Lewis is preparing to for the varsity wrestling season which begins in November.

Lewis said he first has to switch over to different tasks and from Greco Roman to freestyle, but he feels “good for next year.”

Following his loss in the 113-pound championship in February at the Kohl Center, he said he wanted to get back to win it.
