LADY CARDINALS CLOSE STRONG ON ROAD

GREENWOOD -- Farmington closed out the fourth quarter strong scoring the last eight points of the game to pull away Tuesday night at H.B. Stewart Bulldog Arena Farmington freshman Makenna Vanazant, who had a game-high 16 points, scored four of the last eight points to lead the way in a 56-49 victory against Greenwood in 6A/5A District 1 play. "I thought we did a good job attacking the basket in the fourth quarter," Farmington coach Brad Johnson said. "Greenwood does a good job making you play backwards. We were able to attack the basket and finish." Greenwood took a 49-48 lead late with a 3-point basket from freshman Jaelin Glass but then failed to score after that as Farmington took the lead and didn't look back. "The last four minutes of the game we just kept giving up straight-line drives," Greenwood coach Clay Reeves said. "We don't do that. Every game there will be issues. But that doesn't happen to our defense." Farmington shot seven for 10 from the field in the final quarter, while Greenwood was limited to two of 13 shooting in the fourth quarter. "We tried to hunt for good shots," Johnson said. "Against this team, you can't just take the first look you get. You have to find good shots or they will beat you with pressure." Farmington (12-3) took a 16-15 lead after the first quarter by attacking the basket and forcing seven fouls. Vanzant got to the line early and often making six of six from the free-throw line to lead the offense early for the Lady Cardinals. Greenwood (8-9) used a three-point play from Harley Terry to take an 18-16 lead to open the second quarter, but it didn't take long for Farmington to bounce back after that. The Lady Cardinals used an 11-0 run to take a 27-18 advantage late in the second quarter. Farmington used a balanced offense with five players scoring more than eight points. Madisyn Pense scored 13 points and Camryn Journagan added 10, while Anthea Jones and Kaylee Brown added eight points each. Greenwood was led by Julian finishing with a team-high 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
