We are now 6 days away until practice as Kansas high school football athletes strap on helmets and shoulder pads in preparation for the first game of the season on Sept. 1.

Let’s take a look at the No. 6.

Six is a popular number among the Reno County and area ranks. Hutchinson Salthawks running back Joesiah Galindo wears the No. 6 on his jersey. Haven Wildcats’ Jeremy Nisly wears the No. 6, as well as Hesston’s Carter Wingfield, Newton’s Tony Aramburu and Trinity’s Nolan Clarke.

Galindo is a cog in a bullying Salthawk backfield, but he’ll receive a heavier dosage as running back Brody Smith nurses injuries he received in a vehicle accident. Galindo will also carry more responsibility as a senior this season.

Haven almost won its six game of the season last year in a 36-30 loss to Hillsboro. Haven had a chance to take the lead, taking over with 1:02 to play in the fourth quarter and 80 yards from a potential victory. Wildcats’ quarterback Thane Unruh had just hooked up with receiver Ruben Romero on 39-yard touchdown pass. Hillsboro forced a turnover and was able to run out the clock.

Hillsboro won its second game of the year in the sixth game of the season. The Trojans finished with a 3-6 record last season.
