For the four returning players from that team, the shortcoming gnawed at them during the offseason.
“Everybody wants to improve on our finish from last year,” coach Mark Kaiser said. “I’m very optimistic about the season. The kids are motivated to do well based on how we finished last year. They were pretty disappointed in their finish. They’ve all got the mindset they want to go farther. That’s kind of the approach for this year.”

Dalton Rodgerson, J.T. Uhls and Peyton McQueen are competing for the fifth spot on the varsity.

Kaiser believes the top four are capable of shooting around 80, or possibly in the high 70s, in an 18-hole tournament. They worked on their games over the winter, going to clinics, and he’s already seen improvement since the end of last year. He believes they can shoot low 40s or high 30s in nine-hole rounds.

“It’s a matter of trying to get it to happen on one day,” he said.

Despite knowing how competitive the Hoosier Heritage Conference is, Kaiser hopes his team can finish well in that tournament. Pendleton Heights is ranked in the top 10 and Yorktown should have a good team this year. He believes the Golden Bears can finish third or fourth.

“It’s a good group of kids returning from last year’s team,” he said. “They’re very motivated to do well. Hopefully we make a good run at the state tournament.”
