Despite losing its No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles duo, the Shelbyville girls' tennis team believes it can win its 17th sectional championship and fourth in a row.

The Golden Bears are looking to several returning varsity players who could move up to help fill the loss of Jordan Wise (11-8 overall record), who graduated last spring after playing No. 1 singles.

Senior Monica Cooper (11-8), junior Maddie Clark (16-3), sophomore Christina Douglass and freshman Brianna Ayers are battling for spots playing singles. Cooper played No. 2 singles a year ago and Clark was No. 3, and while they may end up moving up a spot, coach Basem Shammas said he's letting the girls win their spots through challenges.

Sophomore Marena Drake, who played No. 2 doubles, will move up to the No. 1 doubles team and will probably be paired with the fourth girl who didn't earn a spot playing singles.

The other doubles team is up for grabs among five girls, Shammas said, and is his biggest concern in figuring out the lineup.

"We have a lot of young kids," he said. "We're going to get them all experience. We have some experienced players but we also have some young kids. Overall, we're hoping to have a good season."

To make it a good season, Shammas wants to win the sectional title again, but also would like to move up in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Golden Bears were in the middle of the pack in the conference and Shammas would like to see his team move up, possibly to the top three.

"Hard work," he said of what it will take to accomplish that. "Staying focused. Hard work. We have a really good group of girls. Dedication is important and the love of the game. Practice hard and listening to the coaches."

One reason to be optimistic for the program is that seven freshmen joined the team this season, some of whom played in middle school.
