Mother Nature was Shelbyville's most difficult opponent at the 2013 tennis sectional hosted by the Golden Bears.

The sectional championship match was postponed Friday and, once again, early Saturday morning, due to wet playing conditions. It took two more hours for the courts to dry out before Shelbyville shut out Triton Central, 5-0, to earn its fourth straight sectional championship — and 17th overall since winning its first in 1978.

"This team has a great attitude... they're fun," said Shelbyville coach Basem Shammas. "They're easy to coach and they listen."

Shammas did little coaching Saturday as the Golden Bears (9-7) knocked off the Tigers (3-9), who were making their first sectional championship match appearance since 1999, in little more than an hour of court time. Shelbyville lost a total of five games in the three singles matches, and just one in the two doubles matches to earn a return trip to the Center Grove Regional on Tuesday to face either 23rd-ranked Center Grove or 25th-ranked Greenwood.

The Center Grove Sectional champion will be determined today at 4:30 p.m.

"We accomplished one of our goals by winning the sectional," said Shammas. "Now, we will go and do our best (at the regional). I won't put any pressure on the girls. We will have fun and do our best."

Shelbyville senior Monica Cooper defeated Michele Gardner, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

Junior Maddie Clark eliminated Brittany Miller, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

And freshman Bri Ayres improved to 16-3 this season at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hinako Matsumato.

"For a freshman to play at this level, she has done wonderful for me," said Shammas. "She is mentally strong and has very sound tennis skills."

Shelbyville's No. 1 doubles combination of Christina Douglass and Marena Drake improved their record to 11-5 this season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lauren Marcum and Sarah Smith.

The No. 2 doubles pairing of Emma Norton and Cortney Pearce defeated Mackenzie Scott and Hannah Troutt, 6-0, 6-1.

The other regional semifinal at Center Grove Tuesday pits Roncalli (12-5) against Southport (8-13). The sectional championship is Wednesday.

Morristown's Amy Gregory and Megan Battles, 13-5 this season, also advanced out of the Shelbyville Sectional. They will travel to Center Grove this week to compete in the sectional round of the state doubles tournament.
