Glen Sanders has been named girls softball coach at Philadelphia High School.

Sanders will coach both the slow-pitch and fast-pitch teams. He takes over for Jordan Flake who stepped down as softball coach at the end of the season. Sanders is from Union and has taught, coached and worked as an administrator in the West Alabama area.

This matter was to go before the school board in its Tuesday meeting. Attempts to reach Coach Sanders were unsuccessful for this week’s paper.

In other personnel matters concerning the Philadelphia athletic program it has been decided that a full-time athletic director will not be appointed for the upcoming school year.

Philadelphia principal Michael Tardy said he would oversee those duties with help of some of the coaching staff.

The board was to also decide what direction the district would go in the hiring of a new boys basketball coach. Currently, Tardy and girls coach Jason Broom have been working with team during the off season as they prepare for the 2017-2018 season.

Tardy also reported that James Savage has been hired as an assistant football coach. Coach Savage is a graduate of Neshoba Central where he played football.
