Glen Sanders, Philadelphia High School’s new girls softball coach, said the Lady Tornadoes will hit the ground running when practice gets underway in July.

Sanders was named to the position in early June but was still tied up in his former position as headmaster at Sumter (Ala.) Academy. The school has announced it would be closing due to declining attendance and Sanders has been dealing with that. He officially becomes a member of the Philadelphia High School faculty July 1.

Sanders will be the head coach of the varsity slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball teams at Philadelphia. He will teach middle school social studies.

Sanders lives in Collinsville and is a veteran softball and football coach. He coached softball three seasons at West Lauderdale. He has also coached football at Sumter Academy, West Lauderdale and Neshoba Central. He was the offensive coordinator.

“I am looking forward to working with the girls at Philadelphia,” Sanders said. “They have had some very good years recently and I want to help to continue that.

“I did not get to work with them during June. Practice officially starts July 24 and we are going to hit the ground running. It comes down to the team that is best at catching the ball, throwing the ball to the right base, getting timely hits and scoring runs. The team that does that the best usually wins, and that’s what we’ll be working to do,”

Philadelphia will be a Class 2A school this year. Slow-pitch softball will be divided into three classes: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3.

Philadelphia will compete in Class 1, Region 6, which will be in the South. Joining the Lady Tornadoes in Region 6 will be Nanih Waiya, Noxapater, Leake County, Sebastopol and Union.

The Lady Tornadoes will compete in Region 4-2A in fast-pitch along with Lake, Union, Newton High and Scott Central.

“I’m looking forward to working with the program and on the staff at Philadelphia,” Sanders said. “I want to take what they have established and build on it.”
