For a high school pitcher, Nolan Lamere is as unorthodox as they come.

The L’Anse Creuse senior – a former batting-practice pitcher – was impressive in his first varsity start on the mound Friday. Now a submarine-style pitcher, Lamere used his unusual delivery to keep Warren Woods-Tower hitters off balance all afternoon.

Lamere scattered four singles, walked none, and struck out three Woods Tower hitters in a 12-2 complete game victory in a MAC crossover. Lamere had command of his pitches, working the bottom of the strike zone to near perfection, benefiting from 13 groundball outs and working five 1-2-3 innings.

Lamere’s delivery is reminiscent of Kent Tekulve, the former submarine reliever who pitched primarily for the Pittsburgh Pirates during a 16-year MLB career.

“When he keeps the ball low he’s very effective because you’ve got that side-arm fastball that sinks and a side-arm breaking ball that dives,” Lancers coach Bob Walmsley said. “Keep it down and they’re going to beat the ball into the ground.”

The Lancers’ starter also kept the Titans’ lead-off hitter from reach base in six of the seven innings.

“They just saw a different approach that they’re not used to,” Woods-Tower coach Tom Miller said of his hitters. “Sometimes it’s a challenge when you get a different type of pitcher. … Even our good hitters struggled today.”

The same wasn’t true for L’Anse Creuse (5-2). The Lancers pounded out 14 hits, including five doubles. Even some outs were hit hard.

L’Anse Creuse broke open a 1-1 tie when they sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run third inning. The Lancers had five hits in the inning, including doubles by seniors David Megge (three hits, one RBI), Jeremy Spezia and Griffin Woezella (three hits, three runs, two RBI).

Senior Eddie Gietzen had two hits, two runs and an RBI.
The Lancers added a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

“Our guys swung the bats pretty well today,” Walmsley said. “We had some better approaches, heck, leading into league season next week I hope we can continue that.”

Sophomore David Asmar (one hit, one run) and junior Drew Lanzon (one hit, one RBI) led Woods Tower (2-5) who scored single runs in the first and seventh innings.
