OOLOGAH — Young basketball teams have good nights and off nights, Oologah girls coach Kandy Damron said. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which one you’re going to get.

Damron’s Mustangs were ready to play Thursday and Lincoln Christian’s girls were not. Predictably, Oologah raced to a 67-29 semifinal victory in the Mustangs’ tournament.

Karly Wadsworth poured in 18 points to pace four Mustangs in double figures, and Lyndi Melton scored 10 of her 13 in the first four minutes as Oologah (4-4) advanced to play 4A No. 7 Vinita (7-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

Damron and Lincoln coach Melody Stewart are tight because Damron worked for Stewart’s father, Mark Campbell, the late former Claremore girls coach who guided the Zebras to three state titles.

Damron’s 17 years with Campbell spanned Stewart’s Claremore playing career.

“Melody and I have spent a lot of time talking about our teams,” she said. “Both are young, and when they’re on, they’re on, but there are nights when they can’t hit a shot. We finished shots tonight, rebounded fairly well and got out in transition.”

Lincoln went from late in the first quarter until midway of the third quarter without a basket. Oologah rode Melton’s hot start to a 16-1 lead and never looked back.

In boys action, 4A No. 1 Fort Gibson routed Central 55-29 and 5A No. 7 Collinsville held off 3A No. 10 Lincoln Christian 57-52. The winners will play at 8:30 p.m. Saturday for the championship.
