COLLINSVILLE – The Collinsville Public Schools Board of Education is set to vote Monday evening on the hiring of Brad Cantrell as varsity girls basketball coach.
Cantrell recently completed his fourth season as head coach at Skiatook, where he was named Class 5A Region 7 coach of the year in 2016.
The Collinsville job came open March 8 when Susie Vaughn resigned shortly after the area tournament. Vaughn had spent three seasons as head coach but had coached that core of seniors since elementary school. She stepped down with aims to travel in the fall and watch her daughter Mallory Vaughn play for the University of Arizona.
Cantrell’s Skiatook Bulldogs famously ousted the Cardinals in the 2016 area tournament, leading to Skiatook’s first state berth in 17 years. The Bulldogs finished that season 20-8 with Mikayla Shulenberger averaging 19 points per game.
“Hats off to them,” Cantrell said after that game. “They’re the kind of program we want to be. They’ve been to the state tournament the last two years or more and that’s where we want to be.”
This season was Cantrell’s 12th in coaching. He was named Metro Lakes Conference coach of the year in 2014.
Vaughn had a highly experienced team in her final season, which was marked by a longstanding No. 1 ranking. Four of the five starters: Mallory Vaughn, Kylie Alberty, Darci Chester and Britany Kickapoo, will graduate this spring.
Junior guards Madison O’Dell and Bryn Willt have the most experience among returning players.
The CPS board is also set to vote on the hiring of Nicole Baughman as varsity volleyball coach. Baughman has spent the previous three seasons coaching at Choctaw. Among other agenda items, Athletic Director Jim Riley is expected to also take on the duties of assistant high school principal. The board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 10.
