BULLDOGS GO 2-2 IN VC TOURNEY

The Wagoner Bulldog baseball squad had a game rained out and played four games in the Victory Christian Tournament last week, where they lost two and won two. They stand at 14-6 on the season. The Bulldogs hosted Inola on Tuesday, but the game was cancelled in the second inning after a heavy thunderstorm brought lighting, high winds, rain and hail to the area. Bulldog Head Coach Brett Bouher said the game would likely not be made up since it was not a district contest. The Bulldogs were trailing 1-0 at the time of the cancellation. Beginning on Thursday, the team traveled to Tulsa to take part in the Victory Christian Tournament. In the first game, facing Mannford, the Bulldogs gave up an early lead in the first inning and were unable to recover, leading to a 5-1 loss. Noah Smith took the loss on the mound, throwing three innings, allowing five hits and three runs and striking out only two. On the offensive side, Malcolm Rodriguez had a notable performance at the plate with two hits in three at-bats. With two games on Friday, the Bulldogs first faced Lincoln Christian, where they pulled out a win, and then lost to Victory Christian the same day. After taking an early lead against Lincoln, scoring a deciding five runs in the first inning, they took the lead after allowing Lincoln to go up 1-0 in their first at-bat. One more run was scored by Lincoln Christian as a result of a Bulldog error, but the Bulldogs held on for a 6-2 victory. Kellen Strickland started on the mound, pitching four and a third innings, giving up two hits, two runs and striking out five. Dylan Mell came in for the save, recording the last eight outs of the game. The Bulldogs racked up nine hits. Strickland and Rodriguez had multiple hits, while Nathan Timmons had a double, Dylan Jones had a single and Jacob Vunetich had a single, all driving runs in. Later on Friday, the Bulldogs would face a solid Victory Christian team. After not committing a single error in the field, VC crushed Wagoner 11-1. Strickland, Rodriguez, Jones and Wyatt Chandler all had one hit for the Bulldogs offensively, while Kane Bowman started on the mound, giving up seven runs on two hits. For the final Bulldog game of the tournament, the team faced Cascia Hall. The back-and-forth game ended in a victory for Wagoner, 11-8, in the high scoring game. Kaleb Brewer earned the win for the Bulldogs. He pitched one and two-thirds innings, where he allowed zero runs on one hit and struck out two. Austin Hornbuckle started the game, but after three and a third innings, he had allowed seven hits, seven runs and had struck out five. Two Cascia Hall players hit four out-of-the-park homeruns — one in the second inning, two in the third and one in the sixth. It wasn’t enough though. The Bulldogs had nine hits. Jones and Vunetich led the team from the plate with three hits each. The Wagoner defense did not commit one single error in the field to contribute to the victory. Wagoner will now face Vinita on the road on Thursday, April 13, Vinita again at home on Friday, April 14 and Oologah on the road on Monday, April 17.
